A take you can't pass

This is crazy to make an assumption that just because someone doesn't immediately take up an offer that he is afraid or doesn't feel he can win. Bob pointed out some reasons, but I can tell you many other reasons why someone might not accept a challenge even if he thinks he can win:
1. He might not want to allocate the time and effort involved as there are other priorities in his life;
2. He might not want to be publicly (or privately) involved in wagers or gambling of this nature;
3. He might not want to have to spend so much time involved with the other person or people involved in the competition;
4. While he might think he is better, he still might not want to risk the amount of money involved if he was wrong or does poorly.
And there are many other reasons, like not knowing the exact terms, etc.
Maybe the offer is somewhat brash and insulting and you don't want to justify it by accepting or giving it serious consideration?
But most of all, just because someone turns down a challenge, that does not mean he is afraid or thinks he would lose.
If Rod seriously wants to challenge Bob to a "duel" to prove who is better, why not pick up the phone and ask nicely and talk about it and how both might get together and do this under terms and conditions that they both agree to. Making "public" challenges and throwing down the gauntlet reminds me of kids on the playground in elementary school. It is not attractive or becoming or fair or nice or called for UNLESS provoked. Did Bob ever say he was better than Rod? Did Bob suggest that Rod was not a good player? I would consider that provacation.
