What is the larger factor in playing 5/4 instead of 6/5? Is it saving a 5 or is it having a chance at a 4 point board?

Shot may come fairly soon and we may have to leave a shot ourselves that if hit has returns. I am scared and will play 6/5 instead. Since race is close being forced to run with a 5 isn't that much worse than dumping 6/1.
