I'm told the answer is out there

This is a three-part question:

1. Is it possible, with both players playing legally and playing the best play, to get back to the starting position, and if so, how many rolls would it take?

2. If you don't care about making the best play, and you played specifically to get back to the opening position, how many plays would it take.

3. What are the rolls that would make this happen?

Again, I am told that someone had already worked this out, but if not, it would be an interesting puzzle to solve.
