I offered!!!

I said beforehand I'd pay someone.

I offered him $50. He declined rather forcefully. I offered him money for gas. He declined. I asked again. He declined.

I was extremely appreciative. He said that I should just appreciate his hospitality and the hospitality of Peoria. And I told him I hope would be able to repay his hospitality with my own at some point in the future.

It's exactly what I would have done had I been in his shoes.

Tournament staff signs on to run a tournament, whether they are paid or volunteer. The above and beyond, like driving someone to the airport because of a time crunch, is a completely separate matter. Not having made a serious offer in this situation wouldn't have been something I would do.
