i'm a pool player, in the pool world calcutta's are illegal in some states and legal in others. Pool players gamble with each other anywhere, however calcutta action does not happen in any California pool rooms because the heat would land on the pool room owner, who would catch a big beef. In Vegas they are legal, and happen at some tournaments there.
I been around pool and gambling since 85, Lived in Vegas for 20 years. I'm 46 so I been around a bit, i'm green in the backgammon world however.
I'm guessing the gaming laws that apply to pool would be similar if not identical to backgammon. In all the gaming statutes I have read I have never seen backgammon or pool ever mentioned specifically. However most of my reading was in relation to casino gaming in Nv.
