How does this work in other contests?

Bridge has accumulated points and no Elo system right? I never understood how it works so well for bridge. Becoming master, and whatever levels there are seem to be prestigious but there are so many new ones every month. Also it is just as much a measure of plying frequency as strength but is still used for who can play in which division.
