I would expect that the error would be less likely to occur if the player has to make the more complex and time-consuming motion of picking up a pair of dice, rather than hitting a clock. The clock will not always be a swing factor, of course, but if it's the case even occasionally, clocks will be getting undeserved bad feelings directed their way.

An example of a case where the clock really does make a difference: One player is closed out, the other opens up his board, and the first player mechanically whacks the clock again. Quite likely neither player notices. That happened with me in a match once, and the first I knew of it was when I saw the tape! (It wasn't clear who benefited in that case, either.) But I am quite sure it never would have happened without a clock.

The above is not an argument against clocks, just an example of what I meant in my previous post.
