A Language in Flux

I like Art's wording.

Unfortunately, our language is in flux, and we have no satisfactory gender-neutral pronoun that is singular.

"He" is not gender-neutral. "He or she" is awkward. "They" is plural, rather than singular, and so is ungrammatical. Similar problems exists for the adjective forms of these pronouns, "his or her" and "their."

In 50 or 100 years we may find that "they" and "their" have morphed into words that are both singular and plural. Until then, by rephrasing so that the issue is sidestepped, I think Art has taken the only elegant approach.

What a hassle.
