TD profits could also increase in a couple of ways:

First, bringing in someone who wouldn't otherwise play. Besides a top player or two, it might apply to someone new to the scene who might give tournament BG a chance if they can try it out at a lower cost. This is other than beginners, for whom TDs wisely keep the price down.

Second, if someone uses their conso dollars to instead play in side events, then the TD gets both the main registration fee plus the side event rake.

It might also encourage players to step up, for better or for worse.

I don't claim it would be a popular option, but options are nice. What's good for the players is good for the game.
