The race lead is enough that hitting hardly matters for winning the game and is unlikely to swing a gammon race if there is no closeout. The gammons mostly happen when you get a closeout and the race lead is enough in that event that a third checker back is not needed. The third checker may even be counterproductive in that it gives him both 1s and 3s to anchor immediately and also hitting costs you the smoothing 6 - 4 play with the 2.
