Conso optional

When you have a progressive consolation, which covers approximately 100% of ABT events that HAVE a consolation, each player who loses in the main bracket feeds to a specified location in the consolation bracket. Let's say that there are four players in a 32 player event who choose not to participate in the consolation. Conceivably, those four could go 0-1, 1-1, 2-1 and 3-1. So, there would be a bye in each slot in the consolation where that player would have gone. It's possible that a person who lost his first match could get four consecutive byes and be sitting in the consolation semi-finals with an 0-1 record.

To me, that does not work.

Perhaps what you really advocate would be an optional Last Chance? The LC is usually a fresh draw on the last day, and knowing in advance who was not going to show up could be accounted for in that draw. However, I think there would be a very real concern about the fairness of awarding ABT point in an optional LC.
