Chess world title used to be played until ww2 between the champion and SOME PLAYER WHO RAISED A LARGE ENOUGH FUND! MC is much more democratic:)

Only after the game gained strength and international support with national feds membership fees, was FIDE able to run the contemporary WC competition. Backgammon could monkey this system if national feds ran national qualifications and also contributed membership fees.
