Those amounts are gone, Ed, you are right. The reasons for that are very clear and itīs foremost the lack of ROI for any sponsor. Most players donīt spend a dime at the casino gaming tables, they donīt show any respect in terms of dressing up properly when a sponsor offers a luxurious and impeccable playing room and pampers them with all kind of goodies, they even find a way to stay at the next dump to save a buck instead of using the hotel facilities of the sponsor (which in case of Enghien, were very affordable). So after some years, and add to that the economic crisis which also hit Europe and the casino business, their reaction will ultimately be: Screw Backgammon, weīre out !
That said, we still have added money tournaments in Europe and they are attractive. Gibraltar had a positive equity in all main and side events with 33k USD added, the European Pro Championships in April in Cyprus has always 27k USD added (thatīs 2 weeks after Nordic Open in 2014) and the Cyprus Open has around 15k USD added.
So anyone who is looking for equity and added money, that place is Europe rather than some 350 USD entry fee tournaments in the US where most are happy to get free bonbons and candies.
