In Response To: Proposed World Ranking System - Update (Steve Mellen)

I think part of the problem is nomenclature. People tend to interpret ranking to be a measure of skill when in this case it will be a measure of results. I personally feel that any effort to determine the 'best' player, while entertaining, is ultimately quixotic. I think what Ken is trying to create here is intended to be functional first (have a clear and objective metric to eliminate sandbagging) and entertaining (supporting the who's better than who argument) second.

I do wonder how widespread is the belief that sandbagging is a problem plaguing backgammon. Are there really unambiguously Open-level players traveling to various ABT events and playing in the Advanced with the purpose of hustling? It doesn't seem to me that there would be enough return for that to be worthwhile.
