Actually, there is no problem with simply sharing the SGF file from GnuBg. XG owners can load an SGF file directly. There is no reason to save a MAT file from GnuBg if your only intention is to share it with XG owners.

If you have done rollouts or analysis in GnuBg, however, that is a good reason for sharing the SGF file, even if you also want to share a MAT file.

For those who transcribe with XG, however, sharing a MAT file is essential. GnuBg cannot read an XG file. As above, if you have done rollouts or analysis as part of a transcription in XG, you should share the XG file as well.

I do not know for sure, but I suspect that Snowie users and BlitzBG users may need a MAT file. Certainly, they cannot load an XG file. It may be that they cannot load an SGF file as well. Of course, if you are not running XG, and you are also not running GnuBg, shame on you!
