Fighters Bracket
When I have played in a “fighters bracket,” it has always been structured so that the player who enters the finals from the losers’ side (called the “fighters bracket”) must win one more match than the finalist from the winners’ side (which I will call the “main bracket”).For example, if there are 32 players in the main bracket, it takes 4 consecutive victories to enter the finals. By using progressive seeding in the fighters bracket, it is possible to ensure that it takes 5 victories overall to reach the finals.
Losers in Round 1 of the main bracket must win 5 matches in the fighters bracket (or get a lucky bye). Losers in Round 2 of the main bracket, must win only 4 matches in the fighters bracket, but since they have also won 1 match in the main bracket, it takes 5 victories to reach the finals. Losers in Round 3 of the main bracket have won twice before being eliminated there, so they must win only 3 more matches in the fighters bracket before entering the finals. And so on.
In the fighters bracket you must “cancel out” your loss by matching it with an extra victory. This penalty is considered compensation enough to establish fairness.
