63S-53P-62 — Four Candidates

This is an interesting position with at least four candidate plays.
  • P (Point) = 10/4, 6/4
  • p (point) = 18/10
  • B (Both) = 24/18, 10/8
  • S (Split) = 24/18, 13/11

The first play I eliminated is making the 4pt. Since both sides would have a two-point board, making the 4pt would seem to equalize the position. On roll, however, your opponent will have the initiative. That’s why I do not want to leave any targets.

Between the two plays that make the 18pt, I like S. Since it is still early, bringing down a second builder should be correct.

The final question is whether making the 10pt while leaving a checker behind on the 24pt is better than making the bar point and activating another builder. At this stage the bar point is the better point. Between the two, it’s the one I would plan on keeping longest.

BTW: I do not have a rollout for this one in my database.

Mike
