One problem is that you have not made any allowance for a player who received a bye in an earlier round. Obviously, if it can be avoided, we do not want one player to receive two byes in the same match. My concern, however, is bigger than that. Why should a player who gets a bye in the semifinal round be forced to pay for it (in the form of reduced prize money and master points) when one or both of his his opponents may have received a free bye in an earlier round?

My position is the same as Danny Kleinman’s. All byes should be compensated.

Henrik Bukkjaer makes some great points in his post today. One that I had not heard before is the likelihood that broadcasters, bookmakers, and sponsors will not like to see byes awarded in the late rounds.
