Then why 1500?

I checked the formula for elo and what you say is correct (I had assumed incorrectly previously)...

So why start backgammon ratings at 1500? Just because that's what chess did?

For chess, where someone might be more than 2000 better than someone else, sure. But in backgammon where there isn't going to be a 2000 point difference, a starting point of 1000 would be nicer, as in the referenced ELO rating system.
