Players fooling themselves is good for you. Prior to the bots, many players fooled themselves into believing they were much better than they were. Then the bots taught them how bad they really were and they quit playing, at least for large stakes.

YOU need players to fool themselves if YOU want to prosper in backgammon. If everyone understood what the real gap was between YOU and them, they would not be as likely to participate in games against YOU, either for money or in tournaments.

It has become very common to have a high opinion of oneself. A recent New York Times article stated; "In the 1950s, 12 percent of high school seniors said they were a “very important person.” By the ’90s, 80 percent said they believed that they were."

Also, having an overinflated opinion of oneself is a common trait in successful people in many fields. It certainly beats having a low opinion of oneself. Most competitive backgammon players are successful in their fields.

I think many backgammon players focus on the PR's in the lower half of their distribution curve and assume that is representative of how well they can play. They then make the easy psychological leap that is how good they are when they are trying or concentrating.

Enjoy and benefit from it!
