Can Human + XG outperform XG?

Of course. A simple strategy: identify one position for which rollouts show that XG, on whatever setting you are using, is wrong. Agree with all decisions of XG, until this one position comes along, then overrule it. Done (although not very practical and meaningful).

I think even the best players would have a hard time to make XG, playing at strong settings, play better. Same for GNU had strong settings. Maybe a .0X PR improvement. And you'd need a player who has studied a lot with the bot at the settings used.
