For me, if an 8 cube is scary enough that you would seriously consider the stake in your decision-making, then you are probably playing too high, since double then redouble is fairly common and the next step is facing or throwing an 8 cube.
If a 16 cube is scary enough that you would reverse a decision you are sure is correct, and throw away any significant amount of known equity to do so, then you are probably playing too high. I am not talking about borderline decisions that you happen to know from a reference position or calculation, but cubes where making the "money management" decision is a clear pure equity error and you know it is.
Here's the exception: If you are playing a whale to make money, and playing higher than you are normally comfortable in order to win more money because they are willing to play for it and you are a much better player.
Then it might make sense to be in a game where you will be scared of an 8 cube, or willing to make known bad decisions at the 8+ level that lower your variance.
But you have to be really careful. It doesn't take many of these poor decisions to reduce your skill advantage by a *lot*, suddenly making it a better choice to just play for a stake you are comfortable with, even if you have to give up that fish to do so.
