...in fact, as CMC also hints, the title system in DBgF recognizes all 3 types of achievements Bill Phipps mentions, you can score a norm by:

- Winning a very big tournament (or getting 3 2nd places).
- Having a sustained high ELO rating over a long period of time or a very high peak rating.
- Recording repeated low PRs in long important matches.

That is how you get the "IM" title (scoring either one of these norms).

To get the "GM" title, you have to score 4 norms in at least 2 categories.

To get the "SGM" title, you have to score 8 norms in all 4 categories (sustained and peek ratings are considered different categories).

Only one player has yet scored the SGM title (Karsten Bredahl), and only one more player is seriously closing in on that title (Steen Gronbech).

To get an idea of the peak rating requirement, only 7 or 8 people in the 25 year history of the DBgF rating system, have peeked over the required 1300 rating points.
