Thanks to some marvelous ďdata scrapingĒ software written by Barry Silliman, Iím now able to display ratings data for 635 people who have played on the U.S. American Backgammon Tour (ABT) during 2009-2013.
Here it is: http://home.roadrunner.com/~kenlarsen/bgUSrating.htm
My ratings proposal, caveats, and next steps appear here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~kenlarsen/bgWorldRankingProposal.htm
Besides Barry, I give thanks to math professor Igor Erovenko. He proposed the various formulas I used in the spreadsheets. His latest suggestion has been to impose a ďminimum weighted events numberĒ of 12. Thatís to keep anyone from being catapulted too high by virtue of winning in their first few events.
Sidebar: From the forum posts, I see that various people are pursuing ranking systems based on Elo and PR. Good luck in those efforts. Iím cheered that so many people are trying to derive a good world ranking system. The best way to solve a problem is to generate lots of ideas and then go sift through those ideas. Thatís a lot healthier than just whining.
