Ken’s rating proposal - 635 people are now displayed

Thanks to some marvelous “data scraping” software written by Barry Silliman, I’m now able to display ratings data for 635 people who have played on the U.S. American Backgammon Tour (ABT) during 2009-2013.

Here it is: http://home.roadrunner.com/~kenlarsen/bgUSrating.htm

My ratings proposal, caveats, and next steps appear here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~kenlarsen/bgWorldRankingProposal.htm

Besides Barry, I give thanks to math professor Igor Erovenko. He proposed the various formulas I used in the spreadsheets. His latest suggestion has been to impose a “minimum weighted events number” of 12. That’s to keep anyone from being catapulted too high by virtue of winning in their first few events.

Sidebar: From the forum posts, I see that various people are pursuing ranking systems based on Elo and PR. Good luck in those efforts. I’m cheered that so many people are trying to derive a good world ranking system. The best way to solve a problem is to generate lots of ideas and then go sift through those ideas. That’s a lot healthier than just whining.
