So, what is the problem?

I am going to make a wild guess that you are using Outlook. I will also guess that you e-mail files in *.mat format. If this is the case, Outlook will convert *.mat files into *.dat files, because it finds *.mat files potentially harmfull for your computer. If this is the case, you can open your e-mail through your browser, and download *.mat files this way. I hope this helps.
