DGT has a draughts board (http://www.dgtprojects.com/site/index.php/products/eboard-draughts/127-draughts-board)

In draught you stack two checkers to make a queen. So I do believe they can already detect stacked checkers. Now in BG you can have 3 high stacks (although it's rare) so it may be a problem. Worse case, if the board only show 10 checker on one point, while there is 12, the software could inferred the position of the 2 missing checkers (there can only be one pile with more than 8 checkers)
