I, probably like the other posters, didn't even think of clearing the mid with the 22 roll. But it does make sense. You clear a hard-to-clear point, create lots of spares, and only leave two extra blotting numbers (10 v 8) compared to making the 4-point heavy.

The 31 play is also interesting. We are up in the race, so why offer up a direct shot? 1) It's somewhat important to make the advanced anchor in this position. If we get pointed on (8 numbers), we might get stuck deep in the oppt's board and not be able to convert to a race. 2) White will not hit with all 6s and 7s (i.e. 65,43, and maybe 61,51). 3) If White does hit, we usually get lots of return shots. Didn't notice this at post time but better late than never!
