"So, why is it correct to play 33B after an opening 65R and yet it correct to play 33A on the third move; 42P-65R-33? What has changed"

It might be a matter of putting the checkers where they belong. After making the 4 point they more strongly belong on the 3 and 5 points so put them there. Also after making the 4 prime you are more willing to play a wait it out timing game so less to gain from advancing to the 4 anchor.
