Wrong seems d (down, 13/8), which does nothing to exploit the blot in White's inner board. Taking into account the race deficit, this play looks too conservative (though closer) even if White's 2pt blot were covered or stacked back on her 6pt.

Given that there is a blot on White's 2pt, $ (Slot, 13/10 6/4) looks warranted. D (Down, 13/11 13/10) is a safer alternative that still builds, but is a less efficient use of the checkers.

As expected, the book recommends the natural-looking $, which was the style of the 1970s and 80s. It's my style, too, so I'll go with $.
