(3a) There's a plethora of research into Sport Psychology and the affect of Bio-psychological and Physiological descriptors. Most prevalent in our domain is adrenalin, stress, anxiety and fight or flight response; all of which are relative across individuals. Some of us will have better coping strategies than others but all of us at some point (be it in backgammon or some other endeavour) would have experienced a state of equilibrium where mind and body are in perfect alignment. It's what Psychologists refer to as a state of self-actualisation. We commonly refer to it as "being in the zone". Our own little bubble where nothing can touch us.

BTW its a myth that nervousness elicits poor performance. Nervousness is an encouraging sign; it shows that you care - lessor mortals should embrace it!
