I think the way this is done in Magriel's 10-movers is you come up with your cube action before each roll. If you haven't doubled yet you keep going until you say double. If you say double/pass but others have taken the game continues anyway.

Anyway, it is a thought, although I am not sure what the optimal implementation is. For instance, say, when your opponent makes a move you can challenge that play. Could be some limited number of challenges or something to incorporate a clock and keep things running more smoothly.
