I think part of the story is not to encourage exchanges of hits and give up your defense while your board is weaker, you are behind in the race, and gammons count. First build your board, and when you have an equal or stronger board than your opp, you can look again. Also important is that White has a difficult time building his position, because the spares are not very flexible.
