But I also believe (3) above is better than (1).

Just to be clear, I understood this alternative just fine from the beginning.

I'm opposed to it because I do not want a captain to have any more power than another player. Please don't use the argument that "a captain is supposed to be a leader" to counter this. It's semantics.

I'd like to offer the alternative of a run-off. Say there's a vote that is tied 4-4-3. Then we ask the 3 people to revote among the top two candidates. Since ties are rare, we won't have to do this often.
