If anyone is explaining "legal moves" to novices by saying "your opponent, and not you, is responsible for making sure you play legally," they are doing a poor job. Perhaps Nancy should be angry with the person who put that expectation in her head. In reality, both sides have an equal obligation to ensure legal moves are played.

You are postulating an LM universe in which Nancy jumps to the conclusion that the Giant cheated her and never plays backgammon again, while in the parallel, non-LM universe, Nancy calmly accepts that she bears sole responsibility for the illegal move and that the Giant, notwithstanding the wide disparity in skill level, was under no ethical obligation to correct it. Perhaps such a human being does exist, but the fact that you can postulate a scenario does not make it an equally likely scenario.
