In Response To: Make a ruling--easy (Art Grater)

when I am at a NLM tournament I always ask my opponent to play legal moves so we do not have many of the problems discussed here. If he does not agree, then I expect him to play perfectly or suffer the consequences as is intended in NLM rules, and I will live and die by the same rules. In otherwords, you can call me Herb Gurland, who I respect greatly, and if he makes any mistake to my advantage I feel honor-bound to live by the intent of the rules. So yes, in this case, he would lose the game. However, as Steve Mellen pointed out, when my opponent has 2 checkers left that cannot fail to be taken off, he doesn't even have to roll the dice against me, or even if he has any combination of checkers that could be taken off with the roll that he made, I score it without his having to play the move. So the exact problem that Bob Koca raised would not occur in my game, as the game was over before he rolled, and with other positions where he could bear off all his checkers given the roll that he had, before he played the move.
