I suspect you may be running into a situation that's new with Java 7 Update 51 from Oracle.

Go to http://www.java.com/verify from the browser you use to play backgammon to see if you are at Java 7 Update 51. If so, try the workaround listed here: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/java_blocked.xml
