IMO, getting a newsreader is the best way to go. That way you don't have to mess with it. You still get text diagrams, but at least they are displayed correctly. FWIW, I am using XanaNews.

Another trick works if you are using Google groups to view rec.games.backgammon:

  1. Click on a message to display it (and its scrambled baord.)
  2. Click the down-pointing triangle on the top right of the message to view "More message actions."
  3. Select "Show original."

This message may still be double-spaced, but at least you can see the board.
