Why not have a designated official to help prevent irregularities and mistakes and rule violations?

Funny you should suggest that. In the just-concluded ISTAVDER 6th Anniversary Tournament, this video from the finals seems to show that it was officiated. In any event, at 11:05, an onlooker stops play to correct an illegal move. The link below takes you directly to the incident.

At 12:30, the same individual seems ready to correct another misplay, but the player catches it first.

This was an interesting match to watch. It was played to only 7 points, and even in the finals of this well-attended tournament, there was a slight oriental flavor to the backgammon. The opening roll of the first game, for instance, was 21, played 13/10.
