If we don't allow public counting, then everyone has to count for themselves every time and the game will drag endlessly.

They do count in parallell though, so it is not like it takes N times as long.

So we do this as a service to everyone to provide the count, and it should be everyone's responsibility, therefore, to contribute what they know honestly to the group information.

So, you still expect everybody to do the count anyway, so they can contribute to the discussion. Seems to me you get all the time used for counting, plus the time used to agree on the right count...
