The horrible advantages and disadvantages I speak of are greatly reduced in a swiss. For example, in a traditional single-elimination, the two best players might meet in the first round and then it's over for the loser; or a reasonable player might meet the No. 1 seed in the first round, lose, and he's out of it; or one side of the draw sheet might have most of the top players bunched together so that the other side has a much easier advance to the finals.

These changes are not "eliminated" but they the brutality of them is greatly reduced and the luck of the draw becomes less of a factor in determining one's fate.
