What do you think of this?

I played in a small, regional tournament Saturday. $50 entry with $25, $50, and $100 side pools. One could enter all of the side pools. There were eight players -- seven entered all of the side pools and one entered none.

The entry pool money was to be split 200/125/75 to first, second, and third. The sidepool money was to be split 675/375 to first and second.

The player that did not enter the side pools reached the finals. The other finalist then paid him some amount of money to 'forfeit' the finals to insure first place in the entry pool and the side pool. This rather than perhaps losing the final -- which was probably a toss-up -- and then perhaps losing the second/third place match -- where he would be the underdog. So, he insured the $875 minus some bribe rather than perhaps only getting $450. I certainly don't think this is in the spirit of a tournament. The 'director' said she could do nothing about it since the 'loser' could have easily 'thrown' the game if he wished.

The same thing could happen in an ABT event where the side pool often exceeds the winning prize money in the entry pool -- since the entry pool is split many ways. There could be one side pool entrant in each of the semifinals. If the side pool entrant lost in the first semifinal to finish, the side pool entrant in the second semifinal could negotiate a deal to insure winning the match and winning the side pool.

What does everyone think of such?
