My primary objective here is not to be hit again. Saving the gammon is my only real concern. I might get lucky and win this game once the bear-off begins, but until then, my only plan is to save the gammon. I expect to be closed out after my board crashes.

With that perspective, I considered two alternatives: making the 4pt “heavy” and making the 2pt (while hitting outside). Were I to make the 2pt, the chances are I would never fill the gap on the 4pt. If I make the 4pt, I will have a much better chance to fill in the gap on the 2pt. In addition, opening the 6pt may mean that White enters behind me.
