I don't know why you wouldn't resign. But I have a backgammon playing friend who frequently arrives at roll-counting positions where it is unclear to him whether he can still win or get off the gammon. So he stops to figure it out and then resigns. Unfortunately he doesn't count rolls very well, so he's often resigning when his chances are not nil.
