Nack and Paul use "airball" in their book. They don't define it, but I'd interpret it to mean a situation where you have lots of hitting rolls but you roll something that not only misses but does nothing constructive.
Gee, that's a lot better than what we came up with! :)
Actually, we do define "airball" in Backgammon Openings: in the Glossary on page 114.
Airball.....An unconstructive roll or number; one that fails to hit, escape or make a point.
