I used the comparison method (borrowed from chess) in making my decision.

If White had pointed on me with 31, instead of 44, then it would be correct to come out to the 18 point. His 8 point is stripped and he doesn't have that many checkers (yet) in the attack zone.

After pointing with 44, White 8 point is not stripped but those extra checkers on his 6 point are still waiting to get into play. If I step out to the 18 point, his bar point, I allow him to unstack his 6 point by hitting my checker on the 24 point with his awkward 5's, besides the joker 55. It seems that it is not correct to come off the 24 point anchor, especially if it involves moving to 18 point after the opponent has rolled an early 44 or 55. So my play is b/24, 13/7.
