I reasoned as follows: In a mutual holding game it's usually advantageous to secure the more advanced anchor (unless you're clearly behind in the race). Priming the opponent's advanced anchor is less urgent strategically. Though I think this line of reasoning is generally sound, it doesn't quite apply here because:
1. tactically, making the 18pt gives the opponent too many good rolls;
2. priming increases in value when the opponent has a straggler as well as an advanced anchor;
3. we're not really ahead in the race, so securing the more advanced anchor is less urgent.
