why not have both?

Just because I have card games to play where memory is a major factor doesn't mean it can't also be fun combined with backgammon.
I have taken the doubling cube and played gin rummy with the cube, and it is the most fun and complex card game I have ever played. It combines an element of poker and bluffing with gin rummy, and of course, if you play a "match" in gin rummy, like you do with backgammon, and use the doubling cube on each hand, you also get into match equity and different take points.
I have also played golf with the doubling cube, as well as pool, and it's quite a bonus.
As for whether or not it's "fun" to memorize cards, yes, I find it fun and interesting and challenging and I can see no reason why this would not apply to backgammon with cards as well.
