I'm not sure what scores you mean by '1 away'. You could mean dmp or you could mean scores where you are 1a and the opponent is more away, Crawford or post Crawford. Anyway...

You will still want to attack with an early double fives most of the time, 3(2) 1(2), hitting whatever is in sight. The times you may not make this play AtS are when the opponent's back checkers are split with an ace so that your three point ends up in front of both his back checkers. In other words, he doesn't threaten to throw one number and anchor up in front of your semi deep three point. At dmp for example I know it's clearly right after 51S-55 to make the three point and it's close after 21S-55 and close ish after 41S-55. With 41S-55 the 9 point builder is so strong we do best to attack still so that our opponent can't use it.

If you put the opponent's split back checkers in a bigger split formation such as 43S-55, 43Z-55, 54S-55, or 32S-55 you will still want to make the attacking play.
