I agree with Ray.
I do have a dog in this fight. Howard bought the rights to run Nevada tournaments from the Northern Nevada Backgammon Association, formed by a trio of Reno-area players who have moved on from the scene (in Peter "The Hat" Hoeffner's case, way, way on) but were great for backgammon.
Their very first major was the first Nevada State Backgammon Championships, held at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino (later nearly as famous for being the place where Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola wrote Godfather III in between sessions at the craps table) in January, 1984.
In the finals LA notable Aram Kouleyan came second to a Las Vegas player, who, along with a healthy first prize, a decent auction payout, AND a press bet (opposite of a hedge), took home a large wooden plaque with a metal faceplate, the whole carved in the shape of the state of Nevada. While not officially part of that tournament, the same player, celebrating in a friend's suite at Harrah's later than night, won one hundred points in the chouette, and saw a cube between the other two players reach 256, the highest in any of his chouettes.
