When you get mad, it's fun to fantasize about this sort tactic. It's all legal, and it would get the solution you desire. Unfortunately, it would also step on some toes along the way.

It is one thing to use 10 minutes when you are contemplating a play. It is another thing entirely to decide on a play in short order, and then just sit for 10 minutes. It may be legal, but it does not fit my code of ethics or sportmanship. If you sign up for a tournament knowing full well that clocks are optional, aren't you making a commitment to play in good faith according to those rules?

Those of us who do not attend as many tournaments as Phil does have the luxury of being picky about the ones we attend. For us, it is appropriate to consider clock rules as one of the many criteria we apply in making our choice. Legal moves is another. More important than either may be overall cost and long-distance travel concerns. But clocks are a part of it, and we can stay away from non-clocked tournaments if we choose.

I'm not talking about a boycott, just the opposite. Rather than trying to hurt a tournament that does not mandate clocks by boycotting it, I am trying to support the tournaments I do like by patronizing them.

I think this is a better solution than using 10 minutes for every play.

But it is fun to fantasize about messing with people to make them do what you want!

Mike
